Sessions
First Things, First
Prior to our first meeting, I will send you an “Initial Pack”. This is basic information and consents. As a Licensed Counselor, I take confidentiality VERY seriously, I cannot disclose anything to anyone without your written consent. Counseling is covered not only by HIPPA laws but CFR 42 which covers mental health. These confidentiality laws are for your protection and are more stringent than regular medical confidentiality requirements. You are encouraged to have these forms completed by the time we meet, or they can fill them out in the waiting room prior to us meeting. If you are uncomfortable answering any of the questions, you can wait until you are with me and answer the questions orally.
Your First Meeting
Your first session with me will be different from future visits. The initial visit is a period for you and I to get to know each other and get an idea of how to proceed. Future visits will be more therapeutic in nature. You are encouraged to ask as many questions you have and express any concerns you may have.
Keep in mind that therapy usually requires multiple visits, so don't expect any instant solutions to your problems the first day. Therapy is about equipping you with life-long solutions and not a quick fix.
During the first session, we will cover:
· What brought you to therapy?
What are your initial goals for therapy?
· What do you feel is wrong in your life?
What resources do you already have?
· What tools do you have that are working?
· What are your symptoms?
· Some questions about your history, including your childhood, education, relationships (family, romantic, friends), your current living situation and your career.
You and I will also come to an agreement about:
· The length of your treatment
· The methods to be used
· The rules of confidentiality
Don’t feel you have to have all of your questions asked in the first session. Trust builds over time.
